Mary watches her own grandma being hung as she has been accused of being a witch. A strange woman who turns out to be her mum rescues her and send her off for a new start with a boat of idealists heading to Salem. Mary is Befriended by another lone woman traveller, Martha and the two seek refuge together. Mary's inquisitive nature soon gets her noticed by the wrong people and history repeats itself when she is accused of being a with. The book ends with Mary fleeing for her life.
