“Brilliant observations of surface details, but the book never allows the reader to get to know any character. I was dying to know so many of them -- they were tantalizing, dangling before my nose -- but the author just never allowed us to see them up close. This killed my interest by about halfway through the book. I couldn't wait for it to end, and didn't really pay attention as I read after that point. ”
