A book with a very real, practical outlook to life. Totally enchanting and absorbing.

These books- I recently bought the set for $1 each, what a bargain-are great fun, even if they aren't an intellectual challenge. I particularly like the description 'traditionally built' for plus-size ladies.

I read the first one on a sweltering summer day, sitting outside on a canvas chair with a Coke in my hand...they are that sort of book.Or an escapist read for a dreary wet weekend. Sometimes one wants to read something light & nice ! I read them just after I finished Philip Roth's American Pastoral, which left me reeling as all his books do-such brilliance, such prodigality with words. What a genius. But one needs something less demanding to follow.

The Precious Ramotswe books are not sentimental, but they are optimistic. There is an African man living here in New Zealand called Precious McKenzie; a very small man who happens to be a champion weight-lifter.
