interesting story. the 30's chicago, crime world. a man is killed and emerges as a vampire. he searches for lost memory and who had killed his human self. i like it. well written. kind of a whodoneit with a vampire backdrop. if u r looking for a lot of sex, u won't find it here but will find a well written tale with some insight about how that depression era was.. highly recommend it

Book One in the Vampire Files series. Jack Fleming is a reporter in 1930s Chicago. On a story, he's shot several times, but does not die. Thoughout his investigation, the reader is given snippets of how Jack became a vampire. A good general mystery. With all the vampire stories out there at the moment, you might think this is just one among dozens, but this was originally written in 1990, so was way ahead of the fad. Audio book read by Barrett Whitener.

Jack Fleming, a vampire P.I., investigates the underworld as villains try to obtain a list that Jack controls. There are more books in the series. I eventually plan to read them all.

This is a great series with the best of both worlds -- vampires & a hard boiled detective

This is the first of the Jack Fleming series. It establishes how and under what conditions he became a vampire. This audio book had me chuckling quite a bit. Aspects of his vampirism is different from what I’ve grown accustomed to in other series. This was a very well written and entertaining novel.

At least! A vampire novel without the sex! This book has a noir/ Old time Radio feel to it. No foul language or smut. Refreshing! I did this one in audio and I think that was part of the appeal.

I went back and looked again...there were maybe THREE swear words in the book. Still very nice to see in today's market filled with steamy sex scenes and graphic gore.

Jack Fleming has a problem, he's dead. The good thing is, he came back as a vampire and wants to find his killer. This is the first in the series, The Vampire Files by PN Elrod. It is set on 1930s Chicago and in my opinion, is a promising start to a series that I will no doubt continue reading - I just can't believe it took me this long to start reading it (I believe this was written in the 90s - I'll check my facts). This is more in the mystery/suspense/gumshoe genre than horror. Its just a detective story with a supernatural twist. I thought it was quite clever and funny in some parts, and it seems that Elrod actually did some research on vampire lore - unlike a lot of the "vampire stories" that are written these days that are making vampire fiction incredibly inane. I would definitely recommend this short and quick read, and I expect you'll see a review for the next in the series before too long. (the first 3 in the series are now available in one volume)

written for the time period after the depression, a detective novel with a vamp twist. Not you typical Vamp book. It reads like the ol' gum shoe books, interesting and cunfusing because of the different type of living/speech then. The characters draw you into the story well and carry it well.
