Themes & Symbolism edit see section history

  • Deryni: Deryni are a type of human who possess strong telepathic and clairvoyant powers. Unfortunately, when some Deryni who have the crown begin to ignore that non-Deryni have rights, too, the balance of power threatens to shift towards chaos. For the main characters of this series, the Deryni wish to use their powers for healing, not for conquering.
  • Ritual Magic: Ritual magic employs elements such as the four directions (north, south, east, and west), physical things such as cubes and chalices to focus the mind, and years of study and discipline to create the desired result. There are great descriptions of ritual magic in this book and the others in this series. It should be noted that the characters performing this magic are adepts and adhere to a Christian belief system.
