Apart from being a whodunnit it also gives us a glimpse of what it was like to live in communist Laos in the seventies. I enjoy learning about other cultures and after Googling the author and finding out he actually lived in the region it has a certain amount of credibility. Wonderful characters, brilliant plot and funny too! Can't wait to read the rest of the series.”

This book was equally enjoyable. 'Lot of humor and very human characters.
'Set in 1970's Laos, after the communists come to power, the hero has to work within the new, inane, communist bureaucracy while trying to solve the story's mysteries.”
“Fabulous mystery featuring an unexpected detective in the character of a state-appointed coroner in 1970's Laos. Wry, thoughtful, lots of cultural and political background.”

They had a list of mystery authors from other countries and this story line sounded good. It was a delightful mystery with some tongue in cheek humor thrown in. I also always like the addition of a supernatural element( eg Odd Thomas) or in this case a spiritual element. Here we have exotic locations and a world that few of us know well. I enjoy learning about different areas while at the same time staying with my mystery/thriller genre.”

This is the first in the series about the Lao state coroner, its been compared with the number 1 ladies detective agency but really it isn't. Its different and gripping. I've already read the second in the series - 33 teeth and am going to buy the rest in the series.”
