A very popular fish learns to share (somewhat reluctantly at first) something important to him.

Rainbow Fish is the story of a beautiful, but proud, fish who has many shiny scales. He turns away many other fish who are not as beautiful as he because he will not share his shiny scales and ends up having no friends. Finally, he gets words of wisdom from an octopus about how to share and be happy. Once he does, he has many friends and he realizes all of the fish are beautiful in their own special way.

The Rainbow Fish tells the tale of a young, and very beautiful fish, who learns to share and to make friends through the act of sharing. This book would be classified as a fable since it features animals who can speak and it clearly points to a lesson that the audience should be learning. I would use this book in kindergarten through third grade classrooms based on the simplicity of the word choice and the lesson. It could be successfully used in the first weeks of school to promote a sense of community and friendship in the classroom.
