In "The Polish Boy," a young John Paul Wieczorek tricks the visiting International Fleet officers, who have come to test his siblings for strategic thinking, into testing him. After proving his brilliance, he convinces them to get his family out of Poland, where they suffer because his parents had more than the allotted number of children. John Paul refuses to attend Battle School, but the officers help because they hope his future children will be the hero they need.In "Teacher's Pet," John Paul attends a class taught by a brilliant young graduate student, Theresa Brown. After the class, Theresa barricades herself in her office because the university administration is cutting her funding in an attempt to blackmail her father into coming out of retirement. John Paul waits outside Theresa's office for several hours, ordering takeout, until she eventually comes out. They fall in love.In "Ender's Game," Ender Wiggin, John Paul's son, is made commander of the Dragon Army. After a series of wins against the other armies, Ender is promoted to Command School, in which he goes through another barrage of tests - only to be told at the end that he has just destroyed the buggers and won the war.Twenty years later, in "The Investment Counselor," Ender's reputation is in shreds, thanks to his own efforts to decry the Xenocide (the killing of all the buggers). Ender and his sister Valentine are traveling from planet to planet in relative anonymity, when a corrupt tax collector attempts to blackmail Ender. Jane, a mind in the ansible network, and now one of Ender's allies, ultimately leaks all of his shady dealings after he does not "tell the whole truth." Ender speaks at his funeral - telling the good and the bad - and ultimately creates the profession of "Speaker for the Dead."
