“Uglies by Scott Westerfeld about a girl who lives in a world where when people turn sixteen they have surgery to make them what the society belives as beautiful, big eyes, full lips... Tally Youngblood is the main character in the novel and she develops and changes in ways that add to the book greatly.
The book is extremely engaging and riveting. It is full of action while it also provides subtle insight and messages towards our society today. The reader feels a connection to all the characters. I could not put this book down and was eager to read it every single day.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in dystopian novels.
“The Uglies is a good book. It shows you how life can or may be if the media keeps influences young people to be taller, skinnier, prettier. Its a the first of the series and I plan to read the rest ”Carmen Orozco wrote this review Monday, November 18, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

“I love this book! It has love, and friendship, and betrayal. It's so exciting! There is a whole other world, where you can't enter until your 16th birthday, when you are transformed into a pretty, but being pretty isn't all its cut out to be as Tally will soon realize. ”Rachel wrote this review Monday, November 11, 2013. “Tally Youngblood is an Ugly, and also everyone else under the age of sixteen. In just a few weeks Tally will be there, joining her friends. In Tally’s world or the world of Uglies, everyone was born ugly, but not for their entire life. Once every child reaches the age of 16 they will get an operation which turns them from an ugly beast, into a beautiful young woman. Weeks before her operation Tally makes a new friend, they were born on the same day so they would turn pretty together.
However, Tally's new friend, Shay isn't sure she wants to be Pretty, she'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away to a place called ‘The Smoke’ which was a rumoured settlement of rebels that had not undergone the operation, Tally learns about a whole new side of the Pretty world which is not very pretty at all.
Once Tally follows Shay into The Smoke, becomes very happy but not until long before the special circumstances come and arrest everyone. Luckily, Tally and David, her boyfriend escapes and goes to the city to rescue other captives including their mom and dad. Unfortunately, they were too late, David’s dad past away but at the same time, Shay has taken the operation and has turned pretty already. To prevent brain damage received from the operation, David’s mom has a way to prevent that but to achieve this test, she needs a willing volunteer. Guilty and willing to volunteer Tally does it in the end. ”
