This book is so full of stereotypes and cliches, I think I lost a few brain cells just thinking about it! Tally Youngblood was one of the most annoying, shallow, and detestable characters I have ever read about. She kind of made me hate books.

Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she cant wait. Not for her license - for turning pretty. In Tally's wolrd, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there. But Tally's new friend Shay isnt sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world - and it isnt very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.

One of the best books Ive ever read! I loved this book, you will never ever read a book like this I promise!! Its a thick book, and alot of reading but totally worth it!! I was completely engrossed in this book from start to finish!

I recommend UGLIES. This book does a good job of seeing the world through this young girls eyes. Tally (the main character) is turning 16, which is like the age of beauty where she's from. You under go an operation to turn beautiful, and get to move to the glamorous side of town and everything. This is all Tally has wanted. Her world changes though when her best friend Shay becomes not so crazy about the idea. Shay runs away to a place where she can be ugly forever. When Tally's long awaited day comes a twist is put on it and she is forced to make some choices. Turn in her best friend or stay ugly forever, and let the journey begin. The only problem I had with this book is I felt like the whole concept was kinda a lot of complaining, but it's life and everyone complains, makes it real. Very good descriptive language by the author and metaphors.

The first in a fine dystopian series, set in a world where everyone is beautiful because of the technology/surgery available at a set point in adolescence. But what happens to one's essence/self when society goes beyond making everyone look equally beautiful? Another engaging story from Scott Westerfeld.

Another entry in the increasingly crowded young adult near future dystopia category. In Tally's world, people live as 'uglies' until 16 when they are put under dramatic surgeries to become the 'ideal' beauty. There's of course a society of outsiders who refuse to become a 'pretty' and Tally becomes entangled with them.

The book has themes of environmentalism, uniqueness vs. fitting in, etc. The delivery is light and enjoyable, but definitely targeted to a younger audience. At times the depth of the outsider society, the Smoke, and the protagonists verges on something grander but in general it felt a bit flat and predictable.

This book takes place in the future after something wrong with our cars and killed off more than half of humanity. In the future they have a surgery that everyone gets when they turn sixteen that makes them pretty. Tally lives in a town where all of her friends have already turned pretty so she is still an ugly. She becomes friends with a girl named Shay who teaches her how to hover board and wants her to run away with her and never get the pretty surgery. Tally doesn't want to run away but on the day of her surgery she has to talk to the specials and they tell her to go follow shay to the run away Uglies hide out "the smoke". They give her a pendant and she is supposed to signal them with it when she gets there.

    Fourth term
    Pages: 425
Characters 1: Which character or characters did I most enjoy and why? I mostly enjoyed Shay. I loved her personality, but after she turned pretty, she was different and I didn't like her as much. I am pretty sure that she will go back to normal after Tally proves that the pills aren't harmful.
Characters 4: What surprised me the most about any of the characters? It surprised me that Tally volunteered to turn pretty and take the pills. I realize now that lots of people have probably figured that out. I was just trying to figure out how she was going to turn pretty that that never crossed my mind.
Setting 2: If I could talk to the author about the setting of the book, what would I ask? I would ask if she came up with this story all together, or just made it up as she went. I really liked this book and am excited to read pretties.

Tally is just about to turn 16. Turning 16 to her doesn't mean she can date or drive to her it means turning from and ugly to a pretty. When you turn pretty you get a surgery that makes you a "pretty." Pretties jobs in the society is to have fun and party all the time. But she meets someone that will change her life forever. Shay is a girl that she met and she doesn't want to turn pretty and Tally wants to know why. Her curiosity can end up either being a bad thing or a good thing. Shay shows her a place outside of the city and they meet someone that says they can help them find a better life. Tally doesn't know what she wants. When Shay disappears Tally is faced with a big choice. Find Shay or stay ugly for the rest of her life. Witch will she choose? will Tally choose to leave the only place she has called home to try to find something she has never seen and doesn't even know if it exists?
