I liked that everything was recyclable, no one ate meat and it was practically a sin to cut down a tree, but I am extremely opposed to any person/society that tells you you're not good enough until you're just like everyone else. Overall, the book rocked and is definitely worth reading.
An awesome book about a distopian society and a culture where being "pretty", while it makes you beautiful, makes you stupid and self-absorbed... yet everyone wants to be Pretty, especially all the Uglies. Yet, I liked the Uglies ugly best, because they do seem pretty in their own way (I find Tally kind of pretty on the Uglies cover, if you ask me), and they have the most fun in life, even if it it breaking rules. I loved the completely futuristic feel of it and I hope to someday ride on a hoverboard, in a hovercraft, and have bungee jackets and crash bracelets. Maybe that's not gonna happen... but then again, maybe it is?
They've been talking about hoverboards in futuristic books for decades now--they should have them by now, but I'm still waiting! :-)
I totally agree!!! And I guess I don't read enough futuristic books to know that. The Uglies trilogy was one of the first truly futuristic novels/trilogies I'd ever read. I can't wait for hoverboards, crash bracelets, bungy jackets (I mean, in this day and age, we bungee jump, but I don't think bungy jackets are truly the same thing, do you?), and hovercrafts (helicopters, I guess; but then again, not?) LOL, the possibilities never end!
This book is amazing! I started it about a month ago (I'm a slow reader) and it is very impressing. I love it
Ask a question, kick off a discussion, or just talk about this book...I LOVE THIS BOOK
Ask a question, kick off a discussion, or just talk about this book...I LOVE THIS BOOK
Although I believe that much of the book was very unrealistic- Uglyville, New Pretty Town, etc.- I did find the book to be a fun read. I feel as if the writing was sort of bad, but I understood it and followed it well. I thought the book flowed pretty well for the grammar mistakes.
I can't believe I've had to go through nearly all the comments to find one that brings up the grammar/writing style. I enjoyed the plot line but I just wish it had been more well-written.
The Uglies is one of my favorite books. It's hard to put down once you start reading and you'll quickly become obsessed with the series (that isn't a bad thing!!)
"In a world of extreme beauty, even normal people are ugly." Great book about an extreme society who controls the people and makes them all the same. Futuristic and interesting twists and turns--I would love a hoverboard!! Good comparison of today's beauty standards--never good enough until you look like everyone else. Definately young adult romance- (blah) with a little suspense. Anxious to read the next two.
Does provide some excellent discussion topics for young teens, about the concept of beauty. Would be a great book for junior high english classes.
There is actually four in the series. Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras. I'm not a big fan on YA books, but it was definitely a good series.
I love this book because it's about Tally finding herself in a world where you're never supposed to. The books following this one are just as good, if not better...
How long did it take the people who read this book to get hooked to it?
I was interested at the end of the firt chapter, and completely hooked by the end of the third!! i couldn't stop till I'd finished all the way through Pretties, and I'm still trying to find Extras.
A book for teenagers and young adults. Growing up years, sensitivities, fears, acceptance and rebellion!
A great series of books for teens and young adults. I picked it up from my 14 year old daughter and got hooked. Takes place in our future and addresses advances in technology, it's effects on civil liberties, government intervention in behavior control and how young adults in this society fight to maintain their individuality. The character's are real and deal with typical teen emotions, fears and desires.
This book is really good, but the sequels are absolutely horrible. (Actually, "Extras", book 4, isn't bad) but the rest are junk.
I've read this book and think it's awesome! I reccomended them to my best friends whos a guy, and he wont read them because he thinks there only for girls. Are there any guys out there who could convinvce him that there not just for girls. Please!
I'm not a guy, but it was recommended to me by a man, so obviously there's some male appeal. Just play up the action, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic appeal to him.
When I read this book I thought that it was an awesome book because there's all sorts of action and excitement.
bored! wowza! it's awesome, as it pretties and specials. i taught it to my 10th graders, and now so many of them are hooked on the series i was checking out my own books to them left and right. keep reading. you'll love. also, westerfield's peeps is KILLER!
I found it hard to follow the first time I read it, but then I reread it and everything was so clear to me. It certainly is an extremely original book.
This is one of those books that makes me proud to be a librarian. I am so glad there is sci-fi for teens that encourages them to contemplate the idea of a government vs. free will and one's own worth. Tally is a strong, but convincing character whom readers can relate to, like Meyer's Bella. The cat vomit line had me hooked from the beginning!
I like this one...But specials I just had to put it down and take a breath! i mean god what more can that poor girl take!?!?!?!
I loved it! I cant wait to read the next books in the series! Wonderful message and you dont know what is going to happen next, I like that about a book!
this kind of morphed my vernacular. I definately say bogus more. And the other day, I think my best friend called me Pri-la, so I called her Ileney-wa ].[
Rebecca's students that read the twilight series recommended this book. So we both bought a copy. I'm not sure about it yet, it is very big theme of being yourself and being an individual not going along with the growd or being like everyone else. It has a big component about playing all the time, no work and what theat does. I'll write a review when I'm finished.
im not sure about it et either i had 2 take a break from reading it b.c i found aslightyl more intresting serioies
I LOVED this book!!!!!!!!! The description is amazing. Scott Westerfield made it feel like you were there with Tally through every adventure. This is one of those books that I couldn't put down because I was trapped in Tally's bizare world and every page made me want to stay there even longer. Well, at least so far. I'm only half way done.
''i think this book was the best one out of all the books that i read''
I liked the book and it had a great idea behind it, however, i didnt think that it was such a bad idea to make a world full of people that are happy. Our world is full of wars and teen suiscides and stuff that it almost sounded nice that there was a world full of happy people who enjoyed life to the fullest. Rather than a world full of depressed people, much like ours.
Well, you could lobotomize depressed people, it used to be done some years ago, but the practice was abbandoned because it was considered cruel and barbaric.
I think there's a huge difference between being happy and not having enough brains left to feel unhappy. But then, maybe people who were not very smart to start with wouldn't appreciate the difference.
Insane people can be happy... and we need to understand that maybe rights come first rather then trying to create a utopia where we are all idiots. Well of course the ruling body over superhumans are normal and working well on the mental scale, anyways most teen suicides are the insane ones... from a teen to any other guy if your not starving life is good.
This book is beautiful.
It really can be an eye-opener and I loved it. =3
I think that this book is more about being yourself, and living your own life....even though there is a city full of pretty happy people that don't have any wars or anything, is it really worth not being yourself? Do we really want people changing something about us, because we just are not good enough? To me that is like telling a fourteen year old, a.k.a ME, that you should just go out and change yourself to fit in, and that it isn't good to be different. I think that Shay, and Tally running away sort of tells us teens that it is ok to be different, and that it is better to be yourself than to just "fit in"! If they would have just become pretty and fit in there would be no story, just like us.........if we fit in and every one is the same, than there is nothing special to our lives, or there is no story!!!!
the thing i most liked about this book is that it gave you an eye into the future. like how it could be in the future. i wouldnt mind having a hover board to get around in.
the hoverboard only works in cities where they try to make life carefree and give you an implant so I prefer the United States]Tally's city
I luv how futuristic this book is, I wish we had the kind'ove technology thats in here
dude i loved this book but the second one jus lost my attention i didnt like it i stop reading it
really, i think that the second was better than the 1st...the 3rd is better yet! you should totally finish the series!
THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK EVER.
PEOPLE WHO HAVENT HAVE TO.
IM PLANNING TO READ SPECIALS AND EXTRAS SINCE IVE READ PRETTIES AND UGLIES, LOOOOVED IT! :)
I've read the three and plan on reading the extras soon! But these are great and I think they are all equally great! I really want to talk about the specials but it will ruin it so Ill hold back! : X
Hey everyone I have started a book club about these books I would like everyone to join up or what so thx!!!
should i read this book? some people say they love it and some hate it?
YES!!! this is like the 2nd best series in the world!!! (twilights first...) READ IT!!!!!
Yes, I recommend it. I likes all four books, and everyone I know who's read them also like them a lot.
I think if you are into action, and imagination, and adventure, you should MOST DEFENENTLY read this book!
it just kinda depends on what kind of person you are i say you should give it a shot if you dont like it then you can always stop reading it
I think u should read this book. I don't know why people gave it such bad reviews. It took me a LONG time before i read it but when I did i really liked it. I thought i wouldn't like it because it was sci fi but it's barely about that stuff. Also, the main character sounds like a superficial brat, but when you think about it her way, everyone she ever knew except for one person became a pretty, so it's completely natural that she would want to be one. But she is still a brat because she betrays her friend and lies and gets everyone in trouble. But that is actually interesting because it teaches u a lesson about life. Most people actually have an experience like this sometime in their life. You should definitely read it.
I would definitely read it. It does sound like tally is mean and has no sense of reality, but in context everything is different. It's not like she meant any harm. I love the sci fi and at first thought it was too sappy for me, but I came to love the characters. it gives you a whole new outlook on whats is really good, and what is bad, and if there is even a line between.
everyone should read this book, a lot say not to read it without even reading it themselves.
It's more then just "should I just go with the crowd?" dumb teenage book
its a fricking conspiracy.
Did anyone else find themselves just like reading 24/7 with Westerfelds books? haha...
yes! I think I read the first 3 ugly series in 3 days. Then when they added the fourth,
I was thrilled! did you read midnighters?
YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I read this book, I couldn't stop. Well I had to stop because I couldn't hold my eyes up anymore . . . But besides that, a very addicting book.
I keep going back and forth on whether or not to start this book...I've heard a lot of mixed reviews and a lot of them aren't the best. I didn't know whether it would be worth my time to read or not?
This book is definitely worth your while. I know it sounds like superficial brats but it teaches the importance of not being so shallow and selfish. Why not read it? The worst thing that can happen is you won't like it and don't finish reading it.
I really liked it. It was different and unique. a little sci fi.
If you dont like it by the second chapter, give it up.
omg this is a really good book. I'm sure if you make the right choice and read it then you will not feel like this is a waste of time. i don't!!!
I really liked this book but once you read the first one you have to keep reading the series
I think u should read this book. I don't know why people gave it such bad reviews. It took me a LONG time before i read it but when I did i really liked it. "aren't the best"!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!! they r the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
again it's more then just a mind numming teenage book about going with the crowd,
the plot has so much depth and character with it that it takes ages to find really if the government is doing good or dealing with evil.
who do you really think is evil? does the society government really want to control everyone, or do they just want humanity to be simpler? Is running away really the answer to a better life/ it sure got tally mixed up!
I haven't read the rest of the series yet but I'm thinking that running away is better. I wouldn't want to live in a society that dictated how I had to look and live. They leave no room for originality or free thought. Who would want that?
The message isn't very original. The best part to me was the futuristic aspect and Tally conflicting with herself on what her life has been based on. What really, really bugs me is that Tally doesn't notice David until Shay points out that he likes her. Maybe that's part of Tally's character, but it was just weird that she just fell in love with him after that.
I really liked this book. It was very interesting. It is kind of like society today. Everyone is so worried about being pretty they get all these operations (some don't turn out so hot) and for what? I definitely liked. I have the second one on hold at the library.
my friend is the one that showed me the books and now i am almost done with the series!!! and that was like a couple weeks ago.
i could agreed. i read all 4 in 1 week! i was only in 4th grade to! Now im in sixth grade so its been 2 years since i read it.
U HAVE 2 READ IT! IT MUTVE BEEN @ YEARS SINCE I READ IT AND IT WAS FUNMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!
um, i really really really want to read it!!! everybody says its AWESOME!!
Take one ultimate Twilight fan. Like, the really crazy ones. Now multiply that fanatic-ness by 8,000,000, and you have how I feel about Uglies. I AM SO OBSESSED WITH THIS SERIES. You diss it, and you have me to deal with. I love this book with all my heart. And all the characters in it. Thank you, Scott Westerfeld, for helping me find my passion.
I guess you really like this series then. So far I found book 2 slightly dull... book 3 is okay so far though. :)
i just got back from buying it @ the bookstore...on page 7....it's awesome!!! (so far!!)
Hi i really want to read this book but i dont know what is really about or if it is really good. Can someone tell me what this book is about and if it is good enough to read?
