Scott Westerfeld is quite possibly the most amazing YA author to walk this planet. Not only are his characters real and distinct, but NO ONE else would be able to think of these totally original plots, and that's a good thing. I have NEVER read any books that are remotely like his. Plus, he's...

Cal is a "peep," a parasite carrier of a sexually trasmitted disease that causes vampirism. When he is asked to track down the person who infected him, Cal teams up with his friend Lace, and together they discover something far more dangerous than vampires.

Very interesting to say the least! I can see that the author went through a lot of trouble with getting al the research for this book! Some of the things he talks about is quite gross but at the same time extremely interesting!

I totally loved this take on vampires. I read his commentary on the website before I read it and was driven to read it. He took the enormous recurring popularity of vampire literature as a challenge, not an easy out to jump on the bandwagon. I have never read such a well researched vampire fiction, with the exception of the Historian, but that's in a different league altogether. Not only was I enlightened to a new avenue and point of view for vampires, but learned about roughly 40 parasites that I'm not sure I wished to know about.

Interesting story with good characters and great interspersions of the scientific "yuck" factor (what actual parasites do to humans and animals). Interesting take on vampirism as a type of parasitic behavior.

Cal Thompson loses his virginity and a whole lot more to Morgan while in New York as a freshmen in college. Unknowingly, he becomes infected and is a rare carrier of the vampire disease. As a hunter, he has to track down everyone he has infected and that means finding Morgan and his first love, Sarah. As he searches Morgan's old apartment, he meets Lace. She is curious about odd events in her apartment building and eventually Cal trusts her with his dark secret. Thinking the PEEP (Cal's word for Vampire) disease can be passed on through sex, he steers clear of Lace, but she becomes infected nonetheless...that's when another dimension of this ancient plague surfaces, drawing Lace and Cal into it grips.
Slow in getting started, Peeps by Scott Westerfeld suddently becomes captivating and suspenseful, with Cal interjecting biological and scientific facts about parasites, worms, viruses, and other beasties along the way.
