Wow, this book had a lot of ground to cover! Simon Reynolds did a fine job and a good number of the most influential post-punk bands of '79-'84 were documented to good detail for a book of such size. Wow, this book had a lot of ground to cover! Simon Reynolds did a fine job and a good number of the most influential post-punk bands of '79-'84 were documented to good detail for a book of such size. The book's a great jumping-off point for those wanting to get into these bands. It's clearly best to do in small chunks to not feel overwhelmed! The chapters are organized well, mostly according to geographical location, label, or the band's "mantra." The biggest disappointment I had was... where the hell is the Jam?! They got maybe a paragraph in the two-tone/ska chapter(?), but come on! Totally essential!

This is THE book to read for insight and history about the post-punk and new wave movement after the Sex Pistols broke up. Reynolds is unbiased and writes in a novel type style that keeps those pages turnin'.

One of the best musical-related books I have ever read. Rip It Up introduced me to new music AND made me rethink music I had previously dismissed.

I'm about 75% of the way through this book (I've put it down temporarily to finish off some other books) and it's terrific. Reynolds structures it loosely by dates and further by band (each chapter tends to be about a group of similar bands--by geography, style or happenstance). If you like experimental music from the 70s and 80s, this is a must read.
