- Aura Salvatorre: Born first after the shift, she has the ability to see and communicate with ghosts.
- Zachary Moore: The last born before the shift, he cannot see or communicate with ghosts. He is also able to repel ghosts. Originally from Scotland, he moved to Aura's school and became her partner for working on their history thesis. He likes Aura.
- Logan Keeley: Aura was dating him before he died after mixing cocaine and alcohol. Now as a ghost, he still loves Aura.
- Megan McConnell: Aura's best friend and Mickey's girlfriend.
- Mickey Keeley: Logan's older brother and twin to Siobhan.
- Siobhan Keeley: Logan's older sister and twin to Mickey.
- Dylan Keeley: Logan's younger brother.
- Gina: Aura's aunt-turned-mother after Aura's mother died when she was only three.
- Ian Moore: Zachary's father.
- Fiona Moore: Zachary's mother.
- Eowyn Harris: A professor who helps Aura and Zachary with their history thesis.
- Nicola Hughes: A DMP agent that helps Logan.
Setting & Locations edit
The story takes place in modern day Pennsylvania. The world contains both humans and ghosts.
- Pennsylvania: Most of the story takes place in Pennsylvania.
- Newgrange: The subject of Aura and Zachary's history thesis. They never actually go, but it is referenced heavily throughout the story.
- Ireland: The location of Newgrange, the subject of Aura and Zachary's history thesis. They never actually go to Ireland, but it is referenced throughout the story.
- Scotland: Where Zachary came from and where he is to return after his father is done with his work in the US.
- Ridgewood: The school that Aura, Megan, and Zachary attend. Logan and his siblings once attended before they moved prior to the books beginning.

- The Shift: Event that occurred during winter solstice, where anyone born on/after December 21st, 8:50 AM Universal time, were born with the ability to see and speak with the dead.
- Post-Shifter: Term used for those born after the Shift that have the ability.
- Pre-Shifter: Term used for those born prior to the Shift and do not have the ability.
- Shade: Term used for ghosts who have changed into black masses. They cause humans to feel sick whenever they are near.
- DMP: Term used for the Department of Metaphysical Purity. They are responsible for ensuring that ghosts and humans live peacefully together.
- Dumpers: Term used by the characters for the people who work for the DMP.
