Janie Gorman is a fourteen year old freshman and wants nothing more to be "normal." The problem is, that is proving to be next to impossible. She’s forced to live on her parents’ modern-hippy self-sustaining goat farm. She has to milk goats every day and endure her mother’s bloggin about her life. Her life-style has made her the laughing stock of ther high school to some and completely nonexistent to others. She dreams of being noticed and being liked. Throughout the story, she chases the dream of "normalhood" only to find out that what she really desires is to find herself and surround herself with friends. She learns to play the bass and joins Jam Band and begins to like a boy named Monster—yes, that is his real name. By the end of the story, Janie discovers that she is not anywhere near normal, nor does she want to be.
