  • Concepcion Benavidez (Thankful Seagraves): The main character of the story. A mestiza born in New Spain and transported as a slave to New England. She is given the English name of Thankful Seagraves upon being sold to the Greenwood family near Boston.
  • Juana Jeronima (aka Hanna Greenwood): The child of Thankful Seagraves. Her father is a pirate captain. She is raised in the Puritan world and is raised to hate her foreign mother.
  • Rebecca Greenwood: The wife of Nathaniel Greenwood. She had one son, Caleb, but could not bare any other children. She covets Thankful Seagraves's daughter.
  • Nathaniel Greenwood: A businessman with many enemies. He purchases Thankful Seagraves from a pirate ship and puts her in charge of maintaining his eldery father-in-law's small cottage and chicken farm.
  • Caleb Greenwood: Nathaniel and Rebecca Greenwood's son.
  • Tobias Webb: Father of Rebecca Greenwood. He hates Rebecca's husband, Nathaniel. He is a grumpy old man who needs much care.
  • Tituba Indian: A slave from Barbados who befriends Thankful Seagraves and is accused during the Salem Witch Trials.
  • Sor Juana Ines De La Cruz: The headmistress of the convent Concepcion was indentured to.
