Not a great deal of plot, but a lot of introspection, beautifully written. Few people can write so precisely and evocatively as Banville.
Alexander Cleave is a 50 year old actor who suddenly loses his moorings and withdraws to the house of his deceased mother. However, the peace of mind he hopes to get there is hard to find, since he has to share the house with secret inhabitants and ghosts. He is also haunted by his wife and by thoughts of his severely troubled daughter.
A joy to read.
