Kyle Rothmore had a privileged childhood—something of which her mother was constantly reminding her. Not many young people were able to claim they had a father who owned a successful insurance company, that they lived in a beautiful post-World War II manor in Washington, D.C., and that they traveled in a chauffeured Rolls Royce. But even with all this for which to be thankful, Kyle knew something was missing—she knew she didn’t belong—she knew her mother didn’t love her—she knew there had to be something more to life.

Not so very faraway, in Riverdale, Maryland, Joel Grimes was searching for the same answers. Day after day, he had to cope with the wall of silence that had been built up between he and his parents. His mother didn’t understand him—his father, a war veteran, didn’t try. And then there was his heart; something just wasn’t quite right with it.

Time passes, answers are found, more questions are raised. Kyle’s beloved father is struck down in his prime by an unexpected heart attack. Even more unexpected, he has left his entire company to Kyle. In fury, Abigail, her mother, launches an all-out effort to have the will’s decision reversed, and Kyle is left feeling even more alone and unsettled. Then, out of the blue, comes the bombshell—“My dear,” Abigail reveals, “I’m afraid… you were adopted.”

That horrible announcement will send Kyle on a search that will forever change her life. A search for the family she didn’t even know she had, the God she had ignored all her life, and the peace that had eluded her for so long. But not until she meets her brother with the dying heart will the answers at last become clear.

Although Another Homecoming is a joint effort between Oke and Bunn, Bunn’s thoughtful, well-researched style is much more evident. The story is not especially refreshing or unique, but it is told in a manner that just might fool a good majority of readers into believing that it is. Some portions, especially later scenes in Kyle’s romance, are rather repetitious, but they do not withdraw from the book as a whole. Characters are believable and three-dimensional, details from the era are accurate and grounding, and both Joel’s and Kyle’s religious quests are believable and thought-provoking.
