- Nick Adams: Hemingway's alter ego. A boy from the upper Midwest who goes to war. He is woven into the material in many of the stories. (There is a separate volume available called The Nick Adams Stories.) By the war's end he's definitely damaged goods. I often wonder if Hemingway sensed the trauma of his war experiences and fought against them or if he was simply a keen observer of it in others and, in his more wistful hours, brought those observations into these stories.
