Willa Jackson is thirty years old, moved back to Walls of Water after her father's death, and owns an organic sporting goods store. Paxton Osgood is thirty, lives with her parents, and has a twin brother named Colin. Paxton is in charge of the restoration of the Blue Ridge Madam, a huge mansion which was once owned by Willa's great-grandfather. Colin is a landscape artist who moved away from Walls of Water but came home to help his sister with the transport and planting of a 150 year old oak tree. Sebastian is Paxton's best friend who moved back to Walls of Water to take over a dental practice. Paxton, Willa, Colin, and Sebastian all went to high school together and have issues to deal with from that time in their lives. At the same time, a body is found while removing the peach tree that is going to be replaced by the oak. The secret kept between Willa and Paxton's grandmothers is revealed and the truth comes out.

  • Willa Jackson: Thirty-year-old woman from a fine old Southern family of means that met with financial ruin generations ago; owner of Au Naturel Sporting Goods and Café; perpetual joker as a youth.
  • Paxton (Pax) Osgood: Socialite do-gooder; an old classmate of Willa's. Twin sister of Colin.
  • Tucker Devlin: Charismatic traveling salesman who smells of over-ripe peaches and creates only tragedy in his wake. He arrived in Walls of Water in the mid-1930's.
  • Colin Osgood: Landscape architect and Paxton's twin brother. He attended school with Willa and Sebastian and was blamed for all Willa's practical jokes.
  • Claire Waverley: A much in demand caterer from another of Sarah Addison Allen's books, Garden Spells. She has a cameo appearance in this book. Caters events with edible flowers being her specialty. She is often asked to work her food-based magic by creating love potions.
  • Rachel Edney: Operator of the coffee bar in Willa's store. She believes that there is a magic in coffee and studies it diligently.
  • Grandmother Georgie Jackson: Willa's grandmother and one of the two co-founders of the Women's Society Club. She is currently in a nursing home diagnosed with a dementia.
  • Agatha Osgood: Pax''s grandmother and one of the two co-founders of the Women's Society Club. She is currently in a nursing home diagnosed with a macular degeneration.
  • Sophia Osgood: Paxton and Colin's mother
  • Maria: Manager of the Historic Blue Ridge Madam Inn hired by Paxton from Charleston, SC.
  • Kirsty Lemon: Wall of Waters realtor and Pax's childhood friend.

The primary setting of this novel is Walls of Water, North Carolina.
  • Blue Ridge Madam: A dilapidated antebellum mansion under reformation by the Osgood family to become a bed-in-breakfast originally built by Willa's great-great-grandfather. Invitations have gone out to current and descendents of past members of the Women's Society Club.
  • Hickory Cottage: Osgood's home. Pax lives in the pool house.
  • Shady Tree Cottage: Sebastian Roger's house.
  • Jackson Hill: Location for the Blue Ridge Madam.
  • National Street: Entrance to the Cataract National Forest and location of Willa's store, Au Naturel Sporting Goods.
  • Cataract National Forest: Government forest adjacent to Walls of Water which includes a number of waterfalls, including Tinpenny Falls, the area's most famous waterfall.
