Evie Carson loves to cook. Maybe it's because her father is a famous TV chef. Or maybe it's because she can escape from the realities of her parent's divorce. But reality intervenes, as her father remarries and is soon expecting twins. Now Evie must deal with a new stepmother and a grumpy next door neighbor, Mrs. Hamilton, whose cat is constantly running away. When her mother agrees to let her take a cooking class over the summer, Evie believes her problems are solved. But her cooking partner, Corey, turns out to be a stuck-up food snob - who just happens to be the instructor's nephew. The instructor also runs an animal shelter, and when Mrs. Hamilton's cat dies, Evie decides that the woman simply needs a new pet from the shelter. During the course of the story, Evie begins to appreciate other people's points of view and to understand that what she wants might not be what's best for them. She discovers new sides not only to Corey and Mrs. Hamilton, but to her mother and father, and even to her new stepmother. Her recipes, much like her life, become more complex and much sweeter.
