  • Bernard: Older author of biographies, member of the Leopardi Writers Circle, twice married - for 20 years to Virginia, now to Aimée who is almost the age of his grown children Rachel and Ted. A pompous but loveable womanizer, slovenly, late, comfortable
  • Adam Freytoch: Member of the Leopardi Writers Circle, designs running shoes, has punlished a few short stories, working on a mammoth, verbose novel. Has engineering degree and a BFA in creative writing. Dating a college senior, Kim who is majorng in computer science..
  • Christopher Billingsley: Member of the Leopardi Writers Circle, successful author of thrillers. Twice divorced with two sons, Ben and Sam, from his second marriage, whom his bitter ex-wife tries to keep from him. has sister, Lydia, and golden retriever pup, Maybe that he'd gotten for his son's and the ex wouldn't let them keep.
  • Gillian Coit: Member of the Leopardi Writers Circle - a recognized poet with a new book coming out soon. Writes rich, intellectual, somewhat pretentious poetry with obscure allusions. A tall, self-centerd, talented, critical, amoral egotist married to Dr. Jerry Traub. She is respected, but not liked bu anyone.
  • Robert "Oates" Mullingford: Nancy's lover, who travels extensively for business and wants to marry her.
  • Aliki: Nancy's college age daughter.
  • Virginia: Member of the Leopardi Writers Circle. Grandmotherly author of historical novels. Married to Bernard for 10 years, mother of thier children Rachel and Ted. Now happily married to Joe Sussman. Grew up in NYC, doesn't drive.
  • Joe Sussman: Widower, now married to Virginia. Grad. degree in History who now runs his family's mattress business. Very supportive of Virginia and her writing. They were elementary school classmates in NYC.
  • Aimée: Bernard's second wife of several years. 1/4 Japanese. 1/4 French, small, slender, looks 20 not 40. Painted his Victorian home all white, cleared it of clutter. Self-centered, jealous. Works for an archetectural firm.
  • Rachel (aka Peachie): daughter of Virginia and Bernard. Married to Denni. Vegetarian, Teaches English at the town's prestigious private Academy and is Paul Traub's advisor. . A peacemaker. Tries to reconcile her brother Teddy to their father's 2nd marriage to Aimée.
  • Helene Spivack: Deceased member of the Leopardi Writers Circle. Adam's mentor. Nancy is replacing her.
  • Paul Traub: Living this year with his Dr. father and step-mother Gillian to attend the Academy. Mother lives in CT. Homesick, friendless, lonely teen whose father is ever critical and bossy. Sister Jennifer hates Gillian. Paul like to draw, but keeps it secret.
  • Peter Ambrose: Handyman for Gillian ion Cape Cod.
  • Theresa Kleinholtze: friend and neighbor of Nancy's. Have horses, one of which Nancy occasionally rides.
  • Donald Bruer (aka Bru): Headmaster of the Acadeny
  • Stewart Joralemon: long time teacher in the English Department of the Academy - discovered two student plagiarists
  • Thayer Henniman: wealthy Academy student
  • Teddy: Virginia and Bernard's son. Married to fellow scientist Marika, a Russian 11 years older than he is. Estranged from his father after his marriage to Aimée.
