In 1943, Dewey has to go on a train to New Mexico where she will live with her father on the hill. She doesn,t know where in New Mexico.a war is going on.
Soon she arrives at a town. It is called Los Alamos, and it is buzzing with activity, as scientists and mathematicians from all over America and Europe. Dewey's father is one of them. they are working on the biggest secret of all, something that will end the war."Over the next few years, Dewey gets to know those scientists, starts working on her own projects, and locks horns with Suze Gordon, a budding artist.

None of them know how much "the gadget" is about to change their lives.

  • Dewey Kerrigan: Dewey is an outcast; she wears two different shoes on each of her feet because she broke her leg as a baby. Dewey is also obsessed with making inventions. She can look in a junk yard and find scraps then make a small wind-up toy or a small gadget. where they inventers leave all kinds of useful stuff. While living with her grandma, she finds gets word from her father that he is in Los Alamos. He is the family she has left so she has no choice but to go after her grandma is forced to stay in the hospital. There, she learns that she is going to live on a very secret place called "The Hill". Everything there is a secret and every child's parent is working almost everyday. While the parents are working most of the day on the whole reason they're all there, she earns a new friend and together they overcome the worst.
