One of my all-time favourites. Smart, suspenseful, involving and intelligent. Read it!

Hated this book but I can't give it one star because I know that the writing is good. The plot was implausible and plodding. I feel somehow that I should like and read Phillip Roth, but not sure that I will after this one. Maybe i should try American Pastoral.

13.3 hrs - borrowed cd version from Dunlap Library - In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected President. Shortly thereafter, he

I have read many of Philip Roth's books. I forgot about him. I was reading the shelf of one of my Shelfari friends and found a few authors I read decades ago. Philip Roth is one of them.
This book is more recent. It is one of those what would happen if books. Charles Lindbergh is elected Pres. of U.S. in 1940, Lindbergh is known for, among other things (lol), for being anti-semitic. So this is the world we learn of. I found it very entertaining.

Well, even a "bad" Philip Roth is still good ! My problem with this novel is there were none of the racy sex scenes that we've come to expect from Philip Roth. (LOL) You know, what makes Philip Roth special (along with John Updike)...is that you expect to get a fair dose of ribald and raunchy prose...along with incredible lyrical and though-provoking writing. It's that mixture of the high-brow paired with porno. But I guess when you are naming the fiction characters after your own family, The Roths in this novel......he didn't really wanna get too porno ? Seriously, I was waiting for some of these fictional "Roths" to start having graphically-described affairs and liasons, just like in other Roth novels. But, that's not what Plot Against America was.

On a serious note: I never really felt the fear that Roth tries to convey. He tries to make Lindbergh a Nazi, but I just didn't buy it. This is kind of a "what if" novel, and you do have to suspend reality, but the idea of Lindbergh defeating FDR and concentration camps on American soil seemed a bit far-fetched to me. Maybe you had to live through that era to understand ?

I loved this book. It reads like a straightforward memoir of events as they might have been. It feels so real. Very touching, very readable.

Not my cup of tea but an interesting story line of what America would be like if we had a different president.
