This book helps me to understand there are many different sides of Islam. I love the parts on ijtihad. Excellent book. I've also seen some of her lectures (on YouTube) and she is great. Very articulate. Read this if you like to learn about religions, especially Islam.

The author is too angry to effectively get her point across. She makes some good points but her anger dilutes her message.

I met the arthur in person sometime after I read her book and found her to be a lovely woman.

An excellent portrayal of some of the dark elements that haunt the current muslim society at the family as well as public level. The secondary treatment of women, and intolerance of the current muslim mindset towards others are the two major concerns of mine as well, and have been quite elaborately presented in this work.

Having said that, Irshad has made almost zero effort to understand what the Quran actually says (pun intended to Ibn Warraq - a critique to his work shall follow soon), and relies on the very same sand-box the Islamic elite and clergy have used for more than a thousand years to rule their empires with an "iron fist"... My request to the author is to make an effort to read in between the lines of the Quranic verses to truely understand the split between it's Message, and later abbarations...

I picked up this book after reading Infidel, and wanted to explore some of the issues raised when Muslim cultures clash with Canadian democractic values. The introduction and first chapter or two really grabbed me. However, Manji tries to explore too much detail and history about Islam in a book that is chiefly a personal exploration of faith. That said, I was thrilled to hear she would be speaking at the Ontario Library Association conference. I heard her speak bright and early one morning, and it was more than worth the pre-dawn wake-up call. She is a dynamic speaker, dedicated to both her faith and modern values related to religion, gender and sexual orientation. She literally puts her life on the line in speaking out, and deserves the respect and admiration she receives. Read the book and try to hear her in person or find an interview on line.

If you are a Muslim and want to have a cold hard look at your faith and the need to reform it, read this book. An excellent firsthand view at the problems with Islam today honestly told by one of the hosts of "queer nation" out of Canada. Irshad Manji, you go girl!!! This book is the most checked out book in our library by Muslim students. They all loved it.

Irshad manji has a rough bite~! It was great reading the book. She is a very articulate woman. Being from a Muslim family - I can sympathize with her angry rants in [arts of the book

Worth a read - know her biases.
