As big a fan of "Kavalier and Clay" as I am, I really didn't expect much from this collection of interpretations of "The Escapist," Chabon's prototypical golden age superhero, who in the book is a cross between Superman (in importance to comic books) and The Spirit (in artistic qualities). So I was blown away by the quality of the interpretations of both The Escapist and Luna Moth, and especially touched to see the wonderful work of Gene Colan, my all-time favorite comic artist, finally rendered as it always should have been, with his original pencils untouched by the ham hands of an inker. I especially liked the textual filler, normally to be ignored, which (re-)told the history of the character and added some wonderful after-story of what happened to the book through the decades. There is an especially funny, perhaps cruel, but true swipe at Vince Colletta tucked in there, like an easter egg for those of us who grew up with Marvel in the '70s. A great work, and I'm going to look for the next in the series.
