A country doctor, Indie, in NC has a patient die. The widow, after talking to her hairdresser finds an attorney and sues. Thus begins a tale that only a good southern story teller can paint with characters and vivid discriptions. About the time you think the story is coming to a nice conclusion greed gets the best of the widow and the story takes a twist that you will not suspect and the rollercoaster starts at an even faster pace until it concludes with the reader wishing it would not end but very happy that they took the time to read it.

Characters/People edit see section history

  • James "Bones" Robertson: Young doctor that works with Dr. 'Indie' Jenkins. It is his story of what happened to Dr. Jenkins. The book opens on 'Bones' first day at the hospital when he meets Jenkins who would become his mentor.
  • 'Indie' Jenkins: A near retirement respected doctor that plays fiddle. He is respected by many and hated by a few. He drinks too much, plays poker and enjoys his fiddle. His patients know his heart is to do them no harm and help them the best he can. A few people cannot stand him
  • Betty: She is the widow that sues Indie and goes for the gold
  • Gibson Taylor: Betty's attorney who is going to go after the truth and get her all the gold he can.
  • Tag: She is the attorney for Indie's malpractice insurance company. A very strong character that is willing to settle but not the policy limit.

Setting & Locations edit see section history

If you have ever walked the streets of a southern town, you have seen the buildings and trees mentioned in this story. Large enough to have a Holliday Inn and a bowling alley but not much more. The only place to eat after 10 p.m. is at the Waffle House on the highway out of town.
  • The hospital: Large enough to have an emergency room. Small enough to worry about competition 30 miles away
  • Indie's Cabin: on a small river out of town with rose bushes out front . It has a front porch, an old low road with potholes and a newer access built when the highway came through. You have seen it in several movies.

Themes & Symbolism edit see section history

  • Music: Those that know bluegrass music tell me the book is filled with bluegrass symbols. I don't know it that much and it did not take away from the richness of the book at all. It does show the healing power of all music.
