I enjoyed this first novel set in the late 1800s in a small village in northeastern Canada. A French fur trapper is discovered murdered in his cabin and a potentially valuable artifact that was in his possession is missing. The son of the main narrator has seemingly fled, sending his mother out...

Well-crafted mystery-adventure in the northern Canadian wilderness of the 1860s. Kept me engaged from the murder that sets the plot in motion to the denoument in the depths of winter. The main characters are well-drawn and complex. Thoroughly enjoyable and quite a page-turner.

I thought this was a very original and well-written novel. The setting was unique and well drawn. I was very interested in all the characters, and kept thinking about this book after I was finished. The fact that it's a mystery seems secondary to the character study it presents. An excellent read!

A little slow at the beginning but good character development and a good, unusal story.

The story was intricately woven and beautifully crafted. I was a little disappointed by how little emphasis was put on the relationship, but still the plot and writing was enough to keep me interested which is usually quite a feat.

I loved the setting and the historical aspect of it as well. I felt a little cold when reading it.
