  • That sparkle makes it all the more sad that real women rarely live up to their fictional counterparts. They have yellowing teeth, or spotty skin. They have the shadow of a mustache, or a nose so big that a mouse could ski down it.

  • “Don’t tell me you’re going to try for virgin birth, my love. I can’t imagine that it worked very well back in Jerusalem. Every time the bishop talks about it at Christmastime, I can’t help thinking that the poor girl must have had a miserable time trying to get people to believe her.”

  • Eloisa James's website: The website has an Inside Take--extra notes from the author. And there as "Easter Eggs" throughout the site--pretty little eggs that you click on to get background information. Here are the teasers for the eggs attached to Beauty Tames the Beast, Eggs 39, 40, and 41: // 39. When Beauty Tamed the Beast is obviously a rewriting of the fairy tale, inspired by the Fox TV show’s Dr. House. I had a lot of fun finding a historical parallel — an arrogant, brilliant doctor — and then building a plot around a real-life, historical treatment for scarlet fever. My imagination took my hero in very different directions than the television show and its hero, but it was fascinating to discover that doctors, then and now tend to be ferociously critical of their peers. Look on the Bookshelf page. // 40. My father, Robert Bly, is famous for rewriting a fairy tale called Iron John. When I was growing up, he would challenge us at the dinner table to explain various stories. “What does it mean when Jack climbs that beanstalk?” he would ask. It’s interesting to see that the very things one finds most irritating about one’s parents can become crucial later in life…he thought me to think about fairy tales, and to be unafraid to rewrite them. Look under Meet Eloisa. // 41. For me, the most wrenching part of writing When Beauty Tamed the Beast was the scene in the chicken coop. I grew up on a farm, and one of the family chores was to clean out the chicken coop. So I have vivid memories of being surrounded by clouds of odiferous effluvia. I found a picture on-line of the coop I had in mind. Look on the Contact page.
