Not as good as the first but not bad. I love Pike!

Read this series back in my junior high days, I am trying to get through it now as an adult because a friend at work lent me the omnibus of the sequels he wrote to the first six books that I already have. Loved the books back in the day. Not so much now. This book is better than the first one. I cried a little when Ray died but was not very attached to his character in the first book and in the second book he was kinda depressing and complained alot. I like the character of Joel a little more and I like Seymore. Although he kind of contradicted his own mythology in this book. In the first book he said vampires don't become vampires by drinking a vampire's blood. But yet when Sita finishes of Yaksha to absorb the last of his power she just drinks his blood rather than allowing it to mix with hers as Eddie supposedly has been doing to make himself so powerful. When Eddie decides to take Sita's power he doesn't do it by mixing their blood he does it by drinking it. But Sita said in the first book that the blood just goes through the digestive track it doesn't change people. So if that was the case. Sita's and Yaksha's blood should have only given Eddie the typical boost he would get from feeding on blood or maybe because they are powerful it would give him a temporary kick but it shouldn't be something that permanently makes him more powerful. If he sticks to the mythology he established in the first book.

I continue to enjoy reading about the vampire Sita. She is a very interesting character, certainly not nice but also very human. Still, I find her too human to realistically represent a 5000 year old being.

If you're the type of reader that worries about the sequel not being as good as the original---don't. Black Blood does not disappoint. The plotting is solid and proceeds at a pretty rapid clip. Christopher Pike knows what he wants to accomplish, and like Sita, he doesn't waste time doing it. I don't know about you, but I like a writer who knows what he's about.

As a character, Sita is as complex as ever, but here she becomes much more expansive as she encounters different obstacles and opponents. Pike puts her through the ringer in Black Blood, and we see her run through the entire spectrum of emotions. She loves. She triumphs. She despairs. She rages. Of course, this is a kind of oversimplified explanation of the really labyrinthine nature of emotion---especially as far as a 5000 year old vampire is concerned, but I find that this is what appeals to me most about Sita.

She's not just this one dimensional character strutting around without ever evolving. She struggles, and she gets her ass kicked, but keeps right on going. There's this real hunger for life, this burning desire to continue, that makes Sita seem very human and even...vulnerable.

The rest of the cast is enjoyable as well. Ray has this sad serenity about him that tugs at the heartstrings. Seymour makes you wish that you had a best friend who was that wise. The villain is not someone you would want to encounter in a dark alley. Krishna is as enigmatic as ever. All very well drawn characters that make it easy to suspend your disbelief.

So, if you haven't already, go to the bookstore---go now---and pick this one up. It's a fast, easy, and engaging read that will leave you eager for the next installment.

    Final Grade: A+

A great sequal to "The Last Vampire". Finally thinking the danger has passed, along with her creator, Sita just wants to enjoy the her new promising life with Ray. Soon, however she comes across a much powerful newborn vampire that reminds her so much of Yaksha she starts to question weather he really is dead. Facing her biggest challenge yet, she must team up with past enemies, her love, and a new friend to help save mankind.
