A solid book. Some fun stuff in here. Didn't live up to his war novels, but not sure what can.

Didn’t Like It

The cover photo says it all. The first book of Tim's that I couldn't finish. His main character is so Tommy Wilhelm (from Bellow's *Seize The Day*) that I finally hated watching him self-destruct and put the book down at page 234 (the flap is still tucked in there). Mildly better is *In The Lake...

I didn't really like this book. The characters just weren't real enough for me and it seemed like there were a lot of loose ends the Tim O'Brien just didn't get around to tying up. Bits of foreshadowing that in the end never really panned out.

And the problem with having your protagonist be a simpering, whining liar is that it’s hard to keep your reader caring about what is going to happen to him. I had to really fight to get to the end of the book because I really didn't care at all how it ended.

What part of this book was laugh out loud funny?

Not sure what I thought of this one. At times I really wanted to just close the book and take it back to the library but then I would read a few more pages and want to continue reading.

Enjoyed it more as I read more. Some threads were a little sparse and could have been more.

I would have like to see a page of the ledger.

I think this was the first novel to make me laugh out loud--literally. I am so against male chauvanists (and I love Hemingway--go figure) but this novel is hysterical. I would recommend it.

I love this book because everyone in it is a complete psycho-path. The author is also very witty.
