Not for everyone. A lot of information-95% of which I'd never heard before! It really changes your appreciation for our country and "some" of the Founding Fathers. ...a somewhat difficult read. Those who don't want to think as they read will hate it.

A magnificent book about this strong-willed, stubborn patriot, third president of the United States. As Washington's vice-president, he bemoaned the fact that greed and the love of luxury had replaced love of country in the hearts and minds of Americans. Although Jefferson and his party accused Adams of promoting a war with France, Adams worked tirelessly to avoid it, saying, "Great is the guilt of unnecessary war."

I have always found American history boring and unapproachable until I read this book. Mr. McCullough brings John Adams and his contemporaries to life in a way that I have never before seen. I highly recommend it.

My Aunt made me read this and I'm glad she did. It was truly eye opening, interesting and I continue to refer back to it for odd bits here and there.

Nothing short of phenomenal. McCullough never fails to deliver. This account marks a definitive view into the multifaceted John Adams as politician and leader, father and husband, the brilliancy of mind, tenacity of character, and strengths as well as shortcomings of person. One of the very best of and thorough biographical accounts and among my absolute of favorites.

Comprehensive picture of late 18th and early 19th century life and politics. It enlightens and puts present day politics into context.

I couldn't get more than 50 pages into it. So, really, classifying this as already read is not really the whole truth, but I couldn't find a category that said, "Tried to read, just couldn't do it." Everyone I know that has read this book has said it is great...for my current frame of mind, it's just too heavy for me. I will come back to it another time!
