- John A. Roebling: John A Roebling is probably the closest real life human being to Ayn Rand's Howard Roark in the Fountain Head. His sense of reason, his engineering skills and his ability to live by his creed were remarkable. Unlike Roark however, Roebling was a family man and left a legacy not only in his personal accomplishments, but through his war hero son Col Washington Roebling. - Col.Washington Roebling: Like his father Washington Roebling was a man of incorruptible character, with a sense of reason rarely matched. With tireless energy even when crippled from caisson disease (the bends), Roebling was in the midst of corruption back room deals and surrounded by self aggrandizing politicians for 14 years and never lost his dignity.
- Emily Roebling: Brilliant, devoted and while her husband was physically incapacitated, she took dictation on every detail of the bridge for him. By the end of the bridge construction she had become a legitimate engineer according to most accounts. And, in a time when women were just beginning to fight for rights and recognition, she was revered as indispensable to what would become the longest suspension bridge ever built and possible one of the greatest engineering achievements of all time.
