“Clare Kimball is an artist; her sculptures are the toast of New York. When an old childhood nightmare starts to haunt her again she decides she needs a change. After her mother's second marriage, Claire is drawn to her childhood home in Emmitsboro, where she starts to untangle her feelings over her father's suspicious death when she was 13. Back in the town where she grew up she has to deal with the stares that go along with having your father die mysteriously, but she also finds peace and an ability to work. Claire also runs into Cam Rafferty, the one time hoodlum and now town sheriff.
Cam came back to Emmitsboro chasing demons of his own; resigning from the police he takes the sheriff job in his home town, where he keeps the peace. When Cattle start getting slaughtered, graves disturbed and a girl goes missing Cam suddenly has real crime to investigate, dark and dangerous crime. Plus he has to deal with Clare Kimball coming back to town, and skinny Clare has grown up just fine.
It appears that in the sleepy town of Emmitsboro there is evil, and when Cam discovers evidence of a satanic cult, and Clare discovers that her father may have been involved to the point where it cost him his life, the pair have to work together to save the town. They don't know how deep the cult goes; who is friend and who is enemy.
This book was overly long, and felt very unbalanced. Nora usually writes romance and mystery very well, but to be really effective in this book, she could have done with a big edit job. At over 500 pages it is maybe her biggest book, and I felt that it took a good 200 pages for the mystery to really start, or for the characters to notice what was happening sooner. Cam and Clare made a good couple, but an awful lot of their development was done off screen and so I felt I missed out. I'm left asking what filled the pages. There were an awful lot of different perspectives and descriptions of satanic rituals, and for all I've read not very much else. I thought there were a number of plots that got dropped, Alice and Bud being one of them (I love the way Nora usually manages to have a few minor relationships in there), Ernie being another. The ending was very rushed, and I didn't like the gimmicky epilogue, it just didn't fit with the set up of the book, that character was developed enough to use her like that and I wanted to know what happened to Cam and Clare.
