Deeply layered and vividly detailed, but surprisingly dull and often very confusing. You will find yourself making excuses not to pick it up again, but the second 1/2 of the book is much more interesting than the first. Ibbotson's books are always a little odd, and this one is just as odd, but for some reason it's not as entertaining or humorous as some of her others.

Reminded me a bit of Joan Aiken's "The Wolves of Willoughby Chase" but only in terms of formula. The pace slowed down far too much in the later third of the book. Ibbotson is great at creating a very realistic time and place giving you the sights, sounds and smell of her stories. However, the slow ending really spoiled the first 2/3 rds for me.
