ugh. snooze fest, i dont get the big hype about Alice Sebold really the only decent thing she's ever writen was 'Lucky' this book ... was like trying to pull teeth, the only thing that kept me going was the thought that 'something might happen soon...' spoiler kids. NOTHING ever happens. finished in 13 days

'When all is said and done, killing my mother came easily. '
After reading that first line, I had to buy the book.

loved the writing of hers as usual but the story wasn't my cup of tea....and I guess describing just 24 hours of someone life in such a big book it was a big turn off for me.....

This book was really hard for me to get into and stay into. It was so hard for me to relate to the main character or sympathize in any way. Someone else may enjoy this book, but I didn't.

I felt oddly detached from the main character, Helen, throughout the entire book. I was confused as to how the author wanted me to feel. If it was supposed to be pity, I didn't feel it. I was almost bored while reading about Helen's "troublesome" life. I'm not cold hearted -- I just didn't feel that her upbringing justified murder by any means (that's NOT a spoiler - it happens in the first page).

On the upside though, I do think that Alice Sebold's writing style is pretty :)

It was interesting to view the world from someone who had mental issues, but it was an awkward book.

I decided I did not want to read it after several pages. It was too gruesome and I would rather spend my time on something else. Unfortunately I missed my book club's meeting when it was discussed. I'm reading reviews to see why people found it worthwhile.
