This book was painful to force myself to finish reading. I don't think the characters were complicated at all. I think the daughter was merely tired of dealing with a psychologically sick mother. She was flat and boring. Her reaction to everything was one dimensional and unrealistic. I don't agree that if you can't put yourself in her shoes you can't call her actions unrealistic. I think many people felt initially how she felt about what to do about her mother, but her actions after the fact are what become completely ridiculous. I did not feel sorry for her, I was disgusted by her. She chose at one point to change her life, but then just did nothing. While the writing itself was fine, the story was disappointing. I think that Sebold tried to take another delicate subject and attempted to turn it into a good story as she did with Lucky and Lovely Bones but failed miserably.

I loved Lovely Bones and Lucky - so I assumed Almost Noon would be just as good..but am very disappointed. Normally, I can finish reading a book within a few days if it's really good..I've been trying to read this for the past 2 weeks..I just can't seem to get into it!

I agree. This book was awful to try and read. Her first two books i thought were amazing and this one was just a great disappointment.

This book. It is just not good. I have loved her other two books, and couldn't wait to read this one. However, I had the hardest time finishing it. This book was horrifying. No one would act like the main character. No one. It was not suspensful - just - wrong on so many levels. was so dissapointed.

I loved the other two Alice Sebold books, and couldn't wait for another to come out. This really disappointed me, I couldn't connect with any of the characters and the whole story line behind it was so twisted. The ending SUCKED! I hated the way it just ended..

K, Jeannie -- you were right but I still wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Luckily it barely took anytime to read.

I'm not disturbed, just bored. I know it is a bad sign when I have read a couple pages and realize I've been skipping over most of it. Boo. I want to put it down, but that isn't my thing either. I hope you're right Jeannie that half way through I'll be captivated...
