Fascinating, interesting and detailed; the only down part is Huntford's obsessive need to denigrate the British approach to dogs and skiing in arctic exploration to the point of distraction.

Somehow Roland Huntford makes his very detailed biographies A pleasure to read. I enjoyed this one more than Nansen but my favourite is the work comparing Scott and Amundsen.

will he remembered for his brilliant leadership than his exploration skills. Huntford captures thespirit of the man and his age.
