Of all the Holocaust books I've read, this is one of my absolute favorites. In spite of the pain and sorrow I experience while reading it, I am also grateful for how blessed Alicia was to survive. As I read of how often she should have died, and yet didn't, I see that the Lord wanted her to...

I hate to give this book a bad review because it is an amazing story and a memoir. Alicia's story of surviving the Holocaust is unimaginable but (I'm so sorry to say) the writing just isn't very strong. I have unending respect for Alicia but you can't really see her feelings as she recounts her experiences. The book is written in a very factual way even though the story should be so emotionally loaded.

This is my favorite book! I loved it because of the detail and the generosity of Alicia. I was changed by her ethics and wit she tells about in this book. It isn't the most happy story, but she always helped others no matter the consequences. This is a must read!

It is a really sad and difficult book to read. There were some parts where Alicia described the torture in such detail that it made me squirm and really feel for her. My heart went out to her and everyone else who went through such a life. She is a powerful, strong woman and a survivor.
