Brilliant biography about one of history's influential women! Quite a remarkable, talented and fearless woman in a century when women were neither seen nor heard!

Georgina Howell writes about Gertrude Bell-a contemporary of Lawrence of Arabia and her travels through the nomadic sands of Arabia.

Gertrude Bell was an amazing women. She was ambitious and accomplished in a time where few women were even allowed to contribute to the academic or political worlds.

Bell was extremly intelligent and driven to succeed. She even succeeded in climbing some of the world's highest mountains.

If you want to know the background of the Middle East and what is still currently the culture, read this book.

A very influential amazing woman of whom I had never heard before I read this book. Who knew that a British woman born to a wealthy family was roaming the desert visiting Arab nomads in their tents and climbing mountains among many other things? She helped to form the country of Iraq and worked along with Lawrence of Arabia. We are so familiar with Lawrence but not with Gertrude. I was fascinated to read and learn about her as well as to find out more about the history of the formation of Irag. Well written book and extensively researched.

I found this book to be slow but interesting. This woman was ahead of her time and this book takes us through her journeys around the world, her climbing and politics. I could see some of the women I know really liking this book but I am not sure I am that kind of woman.

A true story, I had never even heard of this amazing woman. Her jaunts around the Middle East in the early 1900's - alone - define her. Courage and curiosity were her strengths. That paired with a lively brain make for a wonderful story.

I knew nothing about Gertrude Bell until I read this book - what a fascinating woman she must have been. I think this book illustrates quite well how women have been ignored in history books until quite recently, as I'm English but had no idea she even existed until I read this.
