Ripley is smart and talented, but he’s also bored and restless. He has a good head for figures and has worked at several jobs that make use of his bookkeeping/accounting skills. But he never stays anywhere for long. He’s just getting by and longs for wealth, travel, friends and excitement. Enter Mr. Greenleaf who is desperate to have his son, Dickie, return from an extended stay in Italy. Would Tom be willing to go there and convince Dickie to come home? Mr Greenleaf would happily pay his expenses. This seems the perfect opportunity – a chance to get on the road to success and the kind of lifestyle Tom feels he deserves.
What I find so fascinating about Ripley is that Highsmith has created a rather smarmy and petulant “hero” – easy to dislike, and yet charmingly fascinating. How can we help but cheer for him as he strings Mr Greenleaf along and ingratiates himself with the young, wealthy Americans lolling about Europe? But there is a definite dark side to Tom. He is guarded and sneaky, a careful observer and willing to do whatever is necessary to further his own plans. It’s not his fault that he has to kill people; they posed a threat to his dream of wealth.

Odd trip indeed. Unlike the watered down movie, this book has no moral excuse for Ripley. All the better for it. This man has no conscience, no personality. Frightening study of a very disturbed mind written in the usual no-frills Highsmith style.

Another crazy, Tom Ripley, takes on another's identity and moves forward through his crimes.”

“Good story about Tom Ripley a loser running a small-time con who goes to Italy at the request of a friend's father to try to convince the friend to return to America; Tom gets caught up in the friend's life and becomes him; complicated psychological drama with murder”

Yes | No“This engaging novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith, is a quirky crime thriller. Highsmith dismisses with many of the traditional aspects of the crime thriller and presents the amoral criminal, one Tom Ripley, from the inside out. From the very first page of the novel you are sharing the thoughts of Tom as he looks over his shoulder expecting the police to emerge from the shadows to take him away. As the novel ends, he is still looking over his shoulder, so to speak, as he imagines the gendarmes awaiting at whatever European port he is approaching. In between the reader shares the roller coaster ride as this intriguing criminal assumes the identity of young American Dickie Greenleaf, an expatriate whom he has been sent to coax home by Greenleaf's father. Assuming Greenleaf's identity involves Tom in murder and more as he travels from Rome to Palermo to Venice to escape those searching for the missing American. Highsmith demonstrates both psychological acuity and brilliant logic in her portrayal of one of the most likable of amoral and irrational criminals ever imagined. Her writing style is superb and you are disappointed that the tale must end. Fortunately she went on to write four subsequent novels starring the talented Mr. Ripley.”
