This is my first time reading one of these campaign season biographies so I can't really put it in context with others of its ilk, but I really enjoyed it. It is definitely one of the reasons I like him so much. He's clearly a...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Lots of great quotes and good ideas, hopefully we'll see some of them in the next four years. ”

Do I give a higher number of stars for the quality of the writing, or a lower number because I disagree with the author or the philosophies expressed? I'm opting for four stars, because he really is a good writer! He is expressive, sentimental, well-spoken, approachable. I see how he got the vote.
However, I came away from the book understanding even more clearly where I differ from his thoughts - most notably in the areas of "what to do with our current education model" and abortion. He does not see the fetus as a person; and as a father who has surely seen his child move within his wife's womb, as a man who is indeed such a good father - how could he not see an unborn as a person. I think he MUST understand personhood; but his devotion to women's rights trumps the right of the unborn. We diverge dramatically on this.
School solutions: He says longer days, longer school year, universal preschool. I say shorter days, shorter school year, more practical and hands-on work and responsibility, and only preschool for those who determine they want it and need it. I say more parental responsibility will create closer families.
Still - I'm glad I read the book. I think we should always read (at least some) of the writings of those we disagree with, so that we can accurately understand their point of view.”
“I read this before the historical election. Looking back on it, sometimes I think this guy is full of shit.”

If the majority of the electorate had read his books he would not have been elected.
Obama's first book, DREAMS FROM MY FATHER, was very well-written. "Audacity" is not written with the same voice or skill as "Dreams." ”
“This man has an amazing ability to make me cry tears of joy, hope, and pride. While the book gets a little historical in places (not to my tastes) it's an insightful book about the realities of politics. A great read for anyone who wants to know what this man is really about. Reading it 3 years into his term as president his core principles still ring true.”
