It was okay. Definitely not the best Maeve Binchy I have ever read. It got a bit tedious through the middle. Even the ending was not much of a surprise. She has written alot better.

Mooi boek. Lastig om in te komen omdat er zoveel hoofdpersonen lijken te zijn, maar dat wordt naarmate het boek vordert, wel beter.

In typical Maeve Binchy fashion, the story weaves the lives of people in small town Castlebay, Ireland. The story focuses on Clare O'Brien, a poor girl determined to get an educated and leave the small town behind her. I enjoyed the book until the end. The book left a lot to be resolved and leaves the reader on a low note. The actions taken by many of the characters did not seem to fit their personality.

typical Maeve Binchy - great fun story, all sorts of family drama: brother who is a priest who (oops!) falls in love and secretly marries, girl and boy from different sides of town grow up and eventually fall in love, betrayals, etc. Didn't like the ending though, way too vague and not in line with the strong characters...otherwise liked it!

I didn't like that there were no chapters, just four parts. I really liked the story until it got to the twists in part IV, then it just kind of ticked me off.

This is one of Binchy's best. The plot AND the character development are well above her usual good job.
I actually read most of it twice and still think there are nuances I have missed. It is not the usual over the top celebration of the "glorious emerald Isle". Like Circle of Friends, the dark side of the class society that Ireland used to have is illustrated clearly at the end. One character dies unexpectedly and more than that I can't say without jeopardizing your experience as you read it- which I honestly advise you to do!
