Didn’t Like It“I picked this book just because it was Binchy's. I didn't notice that it was short stories. I enjoyed the characters just as I do in all her books, but I did not like to just get started reading about them and then have the story abruptly end. Not my favorite kind of book.” see full review » see other reviews » |

Review: This was my random library shelf draw for May. In this collection of short stories, Binchy explores relationships and how human perceptions can alter our reactions to one another, for both good and ill. All the stories are relatively short and quick, and the entire volume is at just 200 pages. There is one, for example, about two strangers that actually pick up each other's suitcase, and how, when they finally meet to exchange the baggage back, they realize that their reactions to each other would have been different if they hadn't learned certain things about each other from rifling through the luggage. In another, a seemingly-forward thinking cruise worker gets a reality check when he makes some assumptions about a few passengers.
Though as with any short story collection, some were more interesting than others, altogether, the writing was enjoyable, and quick to read. So far, these random book shelf draws have been mostly a positive thing. I'm looking forward to seeing what June brings.”
“Love Maeve Binchy.”

My favorites: "The Wrong Suitcase", you don't really know a person until you go through their suitcase, "The Women in Hats", everyone has an opinion of what they believe is socially acceptable, and "Excitement", just plain funny how it turns out.”

Nevertheless, I find Maeve's warm style, even if in a short story, hard to resist. I liked the Return Journey in general, though I would've called it the wrong suitcase because that's the story that I liked best! ”

I liked being able to pick it up, and put it down during the day and reading a new short without getting totally involved. Some of the stories left me wanting more ...”
