If you've ever seen the movie with Chris O'Donnell and Minnie Driver, you know the basic story. But the book is much better i've found, which I find to be typically true with all books to movies. This story is set in Ireland in the 1950's, and is to be very basic a story of friendship and growing up. The book centers around two friends from childhood, Benny and Eve, who grew up in a small town outside Dublin. They turn eighteen and it is time to go to College, and their small world expands to a circle of classmates who become friends. this widened circle includes a great cast of well developed and very real characters, including the beautiful and confident Nan Mahon, and the dashing young doctor's son, Jack Foley.
Half of this book is about a small town waking up to realize and welcome the changes of a new generation, and the other half is about growing up and discovering who you are and what you want. You really see Benny change as the book progress, and it was a real treat to follow her on her journey through childhood, young adulthood and into maturity. Exquisitely well written and kept my interest from cover to cover. All of the characters are thoroughly three dimensional and real. I really felt included into the circle while reading about them.
In short, I highly recommend this book. It is a great tale that is touching and will pull you in from start to finish. I laughed and cried and had a great time reading.
