  • Lori Shepherd: Volunteers at Oxford's Radcliffe infirmary, visiting people who have no one to talk to in hosptial. Wife of attorney, Bill Willis, mother of 5 year old twins, Will and Rob.
  • Miss Elizabeth Beachem: 56 year old woman who moved from London where she worked in a law firm for 26 years to Oxford to be near her only brother when she learns she has terminal cancer. Leaves bequests to dozens of neighbors and shopkeepers. Lori meets and talks with her in the Radcliffe Infirmary.
  • Mr. Moss: Miss Beachem's solicitor, and employer for the past two years in Oxford.
  • Hamish: A toy stuffed hedgehog in a kilt down on its luck, once beloved by Kenneth Beachem
  • Kenneth Beachem: Elizabeth Beachem's much beloved younger brother. 10 years younger, he disappeared from her life when he was 26, and again just before she died.

  • Mr. Mehta: Owns Gateway to India restaurant on Travertine Road. One of many beneficiaries of Miss Beachem's will - for his brother's new artificial leg.
  • Emma Harris: Lori's best friend and neighbor, a computer whiz who is opening a riding stable. Married to Derek Harris. Helps figure out where and why/how Kenneth Beachem has disappeared
