“Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea is about a professor who goes on an expedition to find the supposed sea monster that has been attacking ships. He is with his crew who do not believe in the creature, until they are proved wrong. The professor runs into the unexpected, meeting new people along the way. The adventures take a course that he did not think possible.
Reason I chose this book: I chose this book because it is a classic full of imagination and adventures. It has a science fiction twist that many students may not be familiar with, and is a great story about keeping an open mind. This book has many twists and turns that the reader may be unaware of, and leads to great discussion topics. This book is also a great one that spark a young boys attention as well as the girls.
Use in the classroom: I would use this book as a whole class read because it has such great potential for discussion. I would have the students keep a journal as we were reading in the perspective as if they were the professor keeping a diary of the adventures. This would help the students make predictions, and incorporating point of view as well. I would also have the students do an extended activity in writer’s workshop where they are a professor searching for something they do not believe in. They would have to include voice, word choice, and ideas in content in this imaginary adventure. ”
