“Delirium is the first book I have read by Lauren Oliver. I still have yet to read Before I fall, but trust me when I say, It WILL be the next book I buy! I had Delirium on hold for a library e-copy. I am beyond happy that I went ahead and purchased this MAGNIFICENT novel!
For me, Delirium is one of those books that makes me want to shout about it from the rooftops! It is so beautifully written in a way that is just completely captivating. I was just so enamored with this book that it was very hard to put down. I found myself caught up in the emotion that the characters were feeling. I would catch myself actually holding my breath, without even realizing it! Oliver's writing is so very descriptive that it made me feel like I was actually in Portland, Maine watching the scenes unfold right there in front of me. While reading what Lena was going through, I felt the passion, the sadness, the hatred and the joy with her. It was an absolutely remarkable experience.
Lena lives in a world where the government has proclaimed that Love, otherwise known as amor deliria nervosa, is a disease that is "the deadliest of all deadly things." Lena's eighteenth birthday is approaching and then she will be old enough to have the procedure. The procedure that cures the disease. She will no longer be at risk of catching this horrible disease that causes so much pain and sorrow. She didn't want to end up like her mother, who committed suicide when Lena was young because she was infected with amor deliria nervosa.
Not long before her procedure is scheduled to take place, Lena's whole world gets turned upside-down when she meets Alex. She begins to doubt everything she has been taught. She goes from anticipating the "cure" to utterly dreading it. No longer so intent on doing everything that she is told to do.
The characters in this story were great. Lena, who started out the average face in the crown, growing into someone she never thought she would be. Its such a remarkable transformation to 'see'. Hana, Lena's best friend, was equally as pleasing. The tall, beautiful, rich blonde who everyone stops and stares at. What I love about Hana is that even though she has all these things she could boast about, she is in no way snobby or thinks of herself as better that Lena. Alex, I really don't know how to put this beast of a man into words, but if your interested in finding out about him, Lauren Oliver does it best!
I cannot forget to mention the romance aspect of this novel. This is one hell of a love story! I'm not kidding guys, I was not expecting to fall in love with this story so much! Sometimes reading the romance parts in a novel bothers me. Not because I'm uncomfortable reading it, but because it can be too 'cheesy' or there is not enough romance to fully satisfy me with the story. Delirium was spot on.
Lauren Oliver did a fabulous job! I really just cant say enough about this book. If you have considered reading it, DO IT! You wont regret it :-) ”
