“I read this book when I was a young lad (laid up from school with a broken leg ha) and I absolutely loved it, the ending was brilliant and put everything into place. I am planning on reading this book again. I will update my review when I have done so. I am hoping that my adult mind still sees the same story and that knowing the ending doesn't spoil it. PS This is not a Horror book as some genres label it, and as most of James Herbert books are too, this is more of a fantasy book”

I heard great things about this author (he also wrote The Fog) and was looking forward to reading a good "horror" novel. Boy, was I ever disappointed! It took me 4 months to read 215 pages and I finally finished it! This is the kicker - the book is labeled as horror genre and it's far from it!
The book's protagonist is a dog named Fluke and he's telling his story. Turns out he was reincarnated and was Nigel Nettle in a former life. Fluke has fragmented memories of his former life that come to him in dreams and moments of enlightenment (that are jogged by words or the environment around him). Throughout the book, Fluke tries to make sense of his "human" traits/feelings vs his dog tendencies. Herbert, unfortunately for the readers, spends most of his time (more than one-third of the book) dealing with this dichotomy. The book acutally picks up during the last 52 pages but it's a little too late in my opinion.
I love dogs and animals in general but I never want to pick up another book dealing with dog's behaviors (sniffing, mating, eating, pawing, whatever!)! If you see this book, run to the nearest exit and don't look back. It's bad; don't waste your time.”
