Cool story - I liked that it didn't end perfectly.

Genuinely spooky in parts. Plenty of twists, turns and shocks.

So gripping, a brilliant story! Hooked from the very beginning!

Initially I was a little put off by Herbert's overly descriptive prose, but the overall storyline was good, and I'm glad I persevered to the end.

SCARY - Loved every "swish" "thawking" minute of it.

Predictable, but in a good way. Nice stormy night read.

I really enjoy a James Herbert story especially of the ghostly variety and this one did not dissapoint in any way. Marvelously creepy. A family stay in an obviously haunted house because they must and so the haunting begins. As the terror mounts they begin to realise that they have made a grave mistake, for these are no ordinary terrors and not only is thier sanity at risk but thier very lives. A delicious nightmare from an author to whom the ghost story is both the stuff of dreams and his perfect stomping ground. If you like this genre then this is one not to missed. It will have you by the throat, throttling you from the first few pages and you will have to read on to very bloody and bruised end.

This was a typical haunted house story and was very predictable, but I did enjoy it. It's been a while since I read a spooky story, and since it is the spooky time of year, I thought I would give this author a try. It disappointed a little in that it did not wander off the course it seemed to be setting for itself at all. A family has experienced a trauma, they go to a big, old-long-unoccupied-house in the English countryside to take their minds off things and then of course the spooky events start to happen; they meet some interesting locals, research some of the history of the house and you can probably guess how it will all turn out from there... Reviews of this author indicate this may be one of his better reads so I don't know if I will read any more by Herbert.

One of my favourite James Herbert stories. The story was not only sad and scary but also memorable.
